Tumblr: The Internet’s Biggest Game of Telephone
I posted this a while back with this comment:

I don’t fully agree with this.  I was able to ask all the questions I wanted when I was a believer.  The problems arose when I challenged the answers.  We’re taught to look to our spiritual leaders for guidance.  As non-ordained congregants, we are usually encouraged to study scripture and seek help when we get stuck or need clarification.  I just never got the answers I was looking for.  Unlike most I took the expensive route of enrolling in Seminary to be able to answer not only my questions, but the questions of others.  Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, it led to me leaving religion more equipped and in possession of the answers I had always sought.  There was no God, and I was being deluded by the writing and teaching of men.
Not a single word of the Bible was penned by God.  Not a single word in red in the New Testament was written by Jesus.  The fact of this is evident in the inconsistencies found in the gospels.  So while I was encouraged to ask questions, I was expected to accept that the Bible was the inspired word of God, to turn to it for my answers, and believe it to be true.  Is that making anyone else dizzy?  Walking that circle, can tend to throw you off balance.  But once I found a spot to focus on, restoring my equilibrium, I was able to realized that I’d been spinning in circles for far too many years.

As often happens here, my comments were lost somewhere along the reblog trail causing people to be upset about the message that appears in the image, one I don’t even agree with.  The only reason I even looked at this again is because the cosmic order vs. cosmic purpose comment added by the last blogger showed up on my dash with the reblog.  I won’t even address the incongruent nature of that statement, this is about reblogging.  When something comes across my dash that’s particuarly offensive or if I believe it to be wrong, I usually go to the source and see what the original poster had to say.  Doing so has stopped me from shooting off some pretty nasty replies.  It’s amazing what gets added and subtracted in this game of blogging telephone that we play here on tumblr.  Not trying to change anything with this one, just an observation.  What a curious place this tumblrverse is. ~ Kim

Not to stir up shit or anything, but I’ve never been told to shut up or not question my faith. In fact, every leader I’ve had has encouraged me to openly ask any questions I’ve had - not only that, but has volunteered to help me find the answers. Just so you all are aware… we’re not all like that.

Omg this! Reblogging for the commentary and the tags!!!

Me too. My religious teachers and mentors have never, ever, ever, told me not to ask questions or challenge my faith. Science is about cosmic order. Religion is about cosmic purpose. We need them both. Let’s stop forcing them against each other, mmkay?

We dont force them against eachother, they are mutually exclusive. There is no way to rationalize Christianity with science. None. Do yourself a favor and admit that Abrahamic religions operate on the suspension of the natural order.

4 WAYS AN ECONOMIST SAYS “I LOVE YOU”

From my IB Economics teacher: Give your loved one a nerdy Valentine and they’ll be yours forever! Why? Because if you give them diamonds/cufflinks this year, anything you get them next year will fall short. Give them one of these and anything they receive next year will be a step up. It’s called expectation management and is the key to a long and happy relationship. On that dismal (science heyoo) note, Happy Valentine’s Day.

One of my local news sites is conducting a poll on gay marriage— or, as I like to call it, human rights. I live in West Virginia where normal, logical, kind people can sometimes be few and far between. Tumblr, you’re good at these things and so I bring this to you. You know what to do. :)
WSAZ.COM   The poll is about midway down the page.

Oh, Tumblr. Take it from here.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY…Fight For The One You Love!

This is the Valentine’s Day video Matthew Brown made for his partner XXXXXXX XXXXX. Matthew’s partner lives somewhere across the Atlantic. He lives a very hidden life because of he way his society will treat him if anyone found out about him being gay. Matthew made this video for him to show his support and passion toward his love and human rights. It was supposed to be a private video, solely for his boyfriend’s eyes, but he turned it into a statement of fighting for the one you love.

This is beautiful and powerful.  When will homophobia ever end?  Why do people have to be afraid to love as freely as I can without the fear of losing everything? I will never understand this.  NEVER! I want to cry at my friend’s weddings, not because of videos like this dammit. ~ Kim

Scientist Suggests Life Began in Freshwater Pond, not the Ocean
(PhysOrg.com) — For most everyone alive today, it’s almost a fundamental fact. Life began in the ocean and evolved into all of the different organisms that exist today. The idea that this could be wrong causes great discomfort, like discovering as an adult that you were adopted as a child. Nonetheless, a team of diverse scientists led by Armen Mulkidjanian is suggesting that very thing; instead of life beginning in deep thermal vents in the ocean, the prevailing view, they say it perhaps instead started in landlocked freshwater pools created by thermal vapor. Their theory is based, as they explain in their paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, mostly on the idea that the sea is just too salty to provide the ideal conditions necessary to spur life into existence.

Leading the Quest to Crack Cosmological Mysteries
Sometimes a scientist can only laugh in the face of a seemingly insurmountable challenge.
Such is the case with cracking the mystery of dark energy and its repulsive gravity, which is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate.
“People don’t even get the term ‘repulsive gravity’ because the defining feature of gravity is that it’s attractive,” says Michael Turner, director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. “What do you mean, repulsive gravity? Do you mean the theory is repulsive?” he jokes.
Turner calls dark energy “the most profound mystery in all of science.” Cracking the problem requires collaborations of original thinkers working beyond the limits of current theories. That’s why dark energy is one of three cosmological puzzles that the Kavli Institute will tackle over the next five years with $17 million in new funding from the National Science Foundation as a Physics Frontiers Center.
